Nottinghamshire County Council Elections 2005-2017

Description

Nottinghamshire's political history is in many ways follows that of neighbouring Derbyshire, with the Conservatives taking control in 1977-81 and 2009-2013 but the council being otherwise a Labour stronghold. Unlike her western neighbour however, Nottinghamshire's Liberal Democrats were generally successful in defending their seats in 2013, which when combined with the surviving presence of Residents Associations in Ashfield and Mansfield means that the council is currently run as a Labour minority. With new boundaries in place and the Mansfield Independent Forum on the back foot in recent years, Labour will be hoping that this is a county where some gains can be made in 2017.

EDIT for 2017: In keeping with the rest of the country the 2017 election was to be a good night for the Conservatives and a poor one for the other parties, particularly the Lib Dems. The latter's poor performance can be partially put down to the controversy that led to the Ashfield Independents splitting off from the party- most of the sitting Lib Dem councillors retained their seats in the new grouping- but their other area of strength in Broxtowe was decimated by the Conservative surge. However there was little impact made in Gedling which seems to be shifting firmly out of the reach of the party. Overall the council remained in No Overall Control with the Conservatives as the largest party.
